What is a video addiction you may all ask?

Let’s deconstruct the word, Video Games are basically are a form of game that requires a video projecting machine [ergo, a monitor] in order to play. It’s usually a form of digital entertainment that requires little to no physical activity (save the Wii) but differs from most digital entertainment since it requires the active participatior of the gamer  (if you just found this out then, congratulations, now you totally know it…that’ll be $5). Addiction….is pretty much like how you just can’t stop doing it (many men are familiar with this feeling) something because it gives you a certain satisfying feeling but at the same time it tends to make you ignore everything else important in life. Which brings us to Video Game addiction…

Video Game addiction basically states you are on the internet for too long that is deemed necessary or healthy. Think I exaggerate? Look back to this statistic [note it was taken 5 years ago…the strength [due to time] is questionable but the fact remains that it’s too significant to simply phase out] I got from my other blog. The average gamer spends 21 hours per week on playing an MMORPG alone. Now consider that the average gamer watches only around 7 hours of T.V. and playing 21 hours of video games while from the same statistics taken a few years ago says that national average [unfortunately, TVturnoff.org no longer exists] says people watch 28 hours of T.V. one cannot help but ask, who is truly worst?

Unfortunately, the media portrays videogames in a very negative light, especially when we get news reports of video game players being obese, unhealthy, pudgy, easily irritated, aggressive, socially-awkward, obsessive….

In short, if you are a video game addict, this is how the media defines you…

you are probaby Eric Cartman circa World of Warcraft...

While the ‘average american tv viewer’ is defined like these guys…

and they look pretty healthy for people that just watch things for 28 hours a week...

Not to mention these little gems about this guy from dying from playing too much Starcraft, A couple ignores their actual child for a virtual one, a son shot his parents over a video-game ban, and to make sure this is not just events occurring because video games are more realistic and therefore suggests more real life things…

stop worrying, she'll re-spawn any second now...just like Halo...

In the 80’s there was a game that has been reported to actually kill the players both in-game and in real life. The game is called Berzerk, it has at least verified to have killed one person who has played it(the other may have died before he even wasted his quarters on the silly gaming box)

This is Evil Otto, the guy that 'kills' you in Berzerk....he has 1 more kills than you in real life

All these people that died and countless more that probably didn’t die or killed well enough to make it to national news [and please for crying out loud do not go out and kill in the name of getting your name out there…] can be attributed to their addiction to video games…

The sad part, the American Psychological Association does not acknowledge Video Game Addiction as a real psychological condition yet they have done researches that says ‘There’s something definitely there‘(note, when the Germans says something is causing their adolescents to be addicted and aggravated, it’s a wise thing to listen to them before it’s too late…)

To recount

-I just defined what a video game addiction is

-What the popular belief about it due to media hype

-What the government (specifically APA) thinks about it

and here’s the legendary foil against the government…

Asides the fact people are obsessive and tends to get addicted to things that aren’t even close to video games [I dunno….crack, nicotine, sugar, meth, heroine and other stuff you shouldn’t try and if you do….please don’t ever ever mention me] games are actually designed to get you hooked [especially MMO’s who’s only source of revenue is your subscription fees], no really look at this article written by a game researcher from Microsoft…

Each contingency is an arrangement of time, activity, and reward, and there are an infinite number of ways these elements can be combined to produce the pattern of activity you want from your players.”

After you’ve done reading it, come back to be and see if you can find the words fun or enjoyment….non? What does he use instead? Level of activity? That’s kinda disturbing since we always considered games to be fun but the developers call it ‘Level of Activity’…

In reality, I agree with him, you have to get people hooked up to keep being interested in your game and ergo, to keep on playing/paying for it. Therefore,  I will introduce in my next blog post what he meant by the arrangement of time, activity and reward and the ‘infinite ways’ the elements can me manipulated to mess you over and keep you getting hooked.

For now I rest my case…

Tune in to part 2….I will further delve into the gaming industry actually making you addicted to their products

My own two cents: I consider Video Game Addiction to exist, and you can take my credibility into account. I have played computer games since the age of four where everyone was stuck putting legos in their mouth, I was doing this. I have owned consoled of different generation from the SNES until present Generation consoles and basically grew up like said Eric Cartman up there, a fat, socially-awkward shut-in that tended to waste hours upon hours into a video game rather than do something more productive and social with his life…

It was a time I wore pink with me.....don't judge me!, I swear I looked pretty manly with that pink bag!

I feel terrible for all the hours I’ve sunk into it honestly, I stopped playing as much as I used to [I used to clock in around 30-50 hours a week, I never study at the university I am attending and still managed to wing it with a 2.86 for the equivalent of goofing off, that’s not very bad but overall, it’s terrible]

Here is my current gaming profile, note this has only existed for almost two years now [around 1.5>] as you can see, it is still a lot of hours and these are the times when my gaming is actually recorded via internet connection.

Video Game addiction is real people, you know someone that spends more  hours playing with a screen monitor than actually socializing with people, you know they exist and you know they need help…
